What Amazon sellers need to know about product photography

Your product photography is one of the most important aspects of your Amazon listing. You spend a lot of time and money creating branded and private label products ; make sure you put the same effort into photography.

With so much competition in the Amazon marketplace, you can't cut corners on product images. In short, high-quality product images and infographics will increase your conversions and sell your products.

In this article, we'll discuss the importance, best practices, and must-haves of Amazon product photography, as well as how to hire a professional product photographer.

Why product photography is so important

You can have the highest quality product in your niche, but if your product photography stinks, why would anyone want to buy your product?

Buying online can be difficult at times – you can't see or touch the product in person, so all you have is pictures and, if you're lucky, a video of the product .

Why is your Amazon product photography so important?

1. Customers can’t see the product in person, so they need to look at it from every angle to make sure they know exactly what they’re getting

2. The main hero image must be high quality and compelling to attract someone to your product detail page

3. If you provide high-quality images in your listing, customers will be more inclined to trust your brand; low-quality images may have a bad effect on the product itself

4. Most customers will look at your product images before reading your listing copy; this is your chance to influence a customer’s buying decision

5. Product photography is a great way to create a unique identity for your brand and help you stand out on Amazon; never use generic images from vendors

6. Multiple images and infographics will help increase your conversion rate, which means the more people who visit your listing, will eventually buy your product

7. By creating lifestyle images, you help show your target audience how your product works

Proper product photography will ultimately sell your product. If you only have one or two images or poor quality images, customers may click and go to one of your competitors.

You only have seconds to make a good first impression on potential clients; make sure your images are the best!

How to Optimize Your Amazon Product Photography for Conversions

Now that you know why product photography is critical to your success as an Amazon seller, let's take a look at how to optimize your Amazon product photography to increase your conversion rates.

1. Make sure you have proper lighting

Before taking a photo of your Amazon product, make sure the lighting is correct so your product looks as natural as possible. If it's too dark, it may be difficult to see all features; too bright, and your image will look overexposed.

If you decide to do your own photography, get yourself an inexpensive ring light for photography lighting kits on Amazon. Usually, it will be equipped with some different lights to be placed at different angles and a light box. This will give you a pure white background.

2. High resolution photos only

No one wants to buy from an Amazon listing with blurry, low-quality photos. Make sure your images are of high quality and high resolution.

Amazon's photography requirements state that your images must be at least 1,600 pixels or larger on the longest side for optimal resolution and to make your images "zoomable."

Most modern cameras and smartphones can shoot at a high enough resolution for Amazon to accept.

If you're not used to taking your own photos or don't have the skills to create high-quality images, this is a big reason why you should hire a professional.

3. Make sure your photo occupies at least 85% of the frame

When uploading your image to Amazon, customers reading your listing will find it weird if your product is "too small" in the photo.

Amazon states that the product in your main Amazon product image must occupy at least 85% of the image, but this is a good suggestion for all of your images. If the image appears too small, it may be difficult to see important features or angles of the product.

4. Shoot the product from multiple angles

Again, customers can't see or touch your product in person, so it's important to show every inch of your product in your images. This means taking multiple photos of the product shown from different angles.

If you only show one angle of your product, it might make customers wonder what the rest of your product looks like.

5. Take “Lifestyle Images”

Bring your product to the environment it is intended for and get some "real life" photos of your product. For example, if you sell kitchen products, show what the models in the kitchen are using. Or, if you're selling swings, take some pictures of people using them outside.

Lifestyle images are a cool way to show how your product works so customers can imagine themselves or a loved one using it.

Amazon Product Photography Essentials

1. Create a "scroll stop" main image

Your main image is the first thing customers see when they scroll through a search results page on Amazon. If your main image is bland or just blends in with all the other results, your CTR may not be as high as it should be.

Make sure your images are bright, bold, high-quality, and showcase your products in flattering angles. Check out the main images of your competitors to see how you can improve and make your own images more attractive.

Remember, when choosing your main image, you must adhere to Amazon's product image requirements .

I encourage you to read through Amazon's guidelines, but here are a few points about your main image:

Main image must have a plain white background Main image must be a professional photo, not an illustration or 3D rendering Main image must not contain any text, logos or other graphics Do not include multiple views of a single product in the main image

2. Add infographics

Only the main image needs to be on a white background, so you are free to add text, graphics and unique backgrounds to the other six images. A great way to make your product stand out and let potential customers know about your product is to use a product infographic .

Infographics allow you to point out specific features and benefits of a product within an image. Rather than having customers read your bullet points or descriptions, they can find all the information they need by looking at your photos.

Don't just add another angle of the product on a white background, but add a colorful background and informative text. This is a great way to increase product sales.

3. Add as many images as possible

Amazon allows you to add up to seven images, so make sure you make the most of that space. Add different angles, infographics and lifestyle images to show how the product is used.

As mentioned above, include as much information as possible (don't make the image look overcrowded) so customers don't have more questions about the product.

4. Include instructional photos

Does your product require assembly or installation? Showcase the process in your images so your potential customers can feel confident buying your product.

5. Comparison chart

With so much competition on Amazon, it's critical to stand out as much as possible and show potential customers why your product is better than others available.

Using a comparison chart, you can point out product features that your competitors' products don't offer. If you're developing a product to improve what's already on the market, you need to communicate this in an easy-to-use way.

Instead of mentioning any brands in particular, add images of similar products and add a list of features to check.

Should you hire a professional photographer?

In today's competitive marketplace, we believe it is imperative to hire a professional photographer and graphic designer for your Amazon product images. Unless you have a background in photography and have a high-quality camera, leave it to a professional.

You've put a lot of time, effort and money into this project, don't skimp on photography. As you might imagine from the information above, photography and product images can make or break your Amazon products.

How is your Amazon product photography?

We hope this article gave you a better understanding of why product photography is so important and how to get the best photos of your products.
