Personal flotation devices (PFDs) to which this policy applies
A personal flotation device (PFD) is a device that helps people stay afloat in the water. PFD is a broad category of goods that includes life jackets, boating vests, life buoys, U-buoys and throwable floats. All U.S. Coast Guard inshore life jackets, inshore life jackets, flotation or buoyancy aids, and recreational throwing personal flotation devices listed on Amazon must meet certain standards.
Offshore life jacket: An offshore life jacket is a sleeveless personal flotation device that can be used in open sea waters, rough seas or remote waterways. Commercial vessels and passenger-carrying vessels must carry this life-saving equipment. Offshore life jackets can be inherently buoyant, inflatable or hybrid personal flotation devices. These personal flotation devices are durable and colorful.
Inshore Buoyancy Vests: Inshore life jackets are not as bulky as inshore life jackets and can be used for general boating and water activities. Such lifejackets may be inherently buoyant, inflatable or hybrid personal flotation devices.
Flotation aids or buoyancy aids: These personal flotation devices can be used for general boating activities or specialized water activities (water skiing, hunting, fishing, kayaking, etc.). Such personal flotation devices may be inherently buoyant, inflatable, or hybrid personal flotation devices. Personal flotation aids, such as flotation jackets, are garments that provide warmth and flotation assistance to the wearer.
Throwable Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs): Throwable personal flotation devices are designed to be thrown at the user. Personal flotation devices marked as Category IV or Category V with Category IV properties are considered throwable personal flotation devices. Buoyant throwable personal flotation devices are made of buoyant materials such as fiberglass or Styrofoam, or can be inflated, usually in white or other bright colors.
Recreational Lifebuoy: Throwable annular PFD used to help people stay afloat in water.
Recreational U-Shaped Lifebuoy: Throwable U-shaped PFD used to help people stay afloat in water.
Floating Pad: A throwable square PFD used to help people stay afloat in the water.
