What is a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
What is a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
Safety Data Sheet (SDS for short, formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheet) is a detailed information bulletin (including 16 parts) compiled by chemical manufacturers or importers. Chemical properties, physical and health hazards, routes of exposure, precautions for safe handling and use, emergency and first aid procedures, and control measures.
With the Safety Data Sheet, Amazon is able to:
Determine if your product is a regulated dangerous good
Correctly classify your product as Hazardous, Prohibited Hazardous, or Non-Hazardous
Determine proper handling and disposal in the event of product spillage or leakage in Amazon operations
Display correct information on detail page
Confirm your product is not dangerous
When are Safety Data Sheets provided?
[ALL] CHEMICAL PRODUCTS IN YOUR CATALOG MUST PROVIDE SDS, INCLUDING WHEN:
the substance (mixture from 1 June 2015) meets the criteria for classification as dangerous goods under the Regulation on the Classification, Labeling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP Regulation), or
The mixture meets the criteria for the classification of dangerous goods under the Directive on Dangerous Preparations/EC (DPD) (as of 1 June 2015), or
A substance is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and bioaccumulative (vPvB) according to the criteria set out in Annex XIII of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation ,or
A substance is included in the Candidate List for Final Authorization for any other reason according to Article 59 (1) of the REACH Regulation (see Article 31 (1) of the REACH Regulation) Consultation: 15135629064 same as V.
If you do not have SDSs for chemical commodities yourself, you can obtain them from suppliers, manufacturers or technical departments. Note: If your product is a bundle or a kit containing multiple chemical commodities, you must provide an SDS for each product in the bundle/kit. When you obtain SDSs, they must be checked for compliance with the following requirements:
Must have a creation or modification date (within the last five years)
Match your item:
The product title (i.e. the product name shown on the Amazon detail page) must be the same as the product name shown on the SDS
Your product must have the same manufacturer/brand name on the SDS as it appears on the Amazon detail page
Contains all 16 standard SDS sections in the correct order. For detailed requirements of each part, please refer to REACH Annex II:
Part 1: Identification of the substance/mixture and company/undertaking
SECTION 2: HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
SECTION 3: COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
SECTION 4: First aid measures
SECTION 5: FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES
SECTION 6: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
SECTION 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE
SECTION 8: Exposure controls/personal protection
SECTION 9: PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
SECTION 10: STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
SECTION 11: Toxicological information
SECTION 12: ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
SECTION 13: DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
SECTION 14: Transport information
SECTION 15: REGULATORY INFORMATION
SECTION 16: OTHER INFORMATION
The information on the SDS must match the product label information
The SDS must be provided in the language of the country in which the product will be sold. If your products are sold in multiple EU countries, you need to provide the SDS in the languages of these countries. For example, if you sell products in the UK and France, you will need to provide an SDS in English and a French SDS.
Make sure that the hazard statements listed in Section 2 comply with the wording specified in the CLP regulations.
The commodity identification part (Part 1) needs to identify which commodities the SDS applies to, see Article 18 of the CLP Regulation for details.
Although the use of GHS pictorial symbols is not mandatory in an SDS, if your SDS includes GHS pictorial symbols in the hazard identification section, you will need to reflect these pictorial symbols with an appropriate hazard statement. SDSs with GHS pictorial symbols without a corresponding hazard statement will be considered invalid.
