Dangerous goods (also known as hazmat) are substances or materials that may pose a risk during storage, handling, or transportation because they contain flammable, pressurized, corrosive, or other hazardous substances.
Many sellers face issues when it comes to HAZMAT or even regular products, Amazon needs to submit Safety Data Sheets (SDS ) when creating or converting listings from FBM (Merchant Fulfilled) to FBA (Amazon Fulfilled ).
Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for chemicals that may be classified as hazardous (see examples of common hazardous substances). If you do not have access to a product's SDS, and the product does not contain any harmful chemicals (such as alcohol, acid, or sodium), you can upload a product ingredient list for a product that is free of harmful chemicals.
The Battery Product Information Sheet applies to products that contain or are sold with batteries (see examples of common dangerous goods), or are otherwise powered.
What do I need for a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
A qualified SDS must meet the following requirements:
Created or updated within the past five years
Include new/CLP hazard identification information
Match your product listings:
The product name (shown on the detail page) must be the same as the product name shown on the SDS
The manufacturer or brand name of your item on the SDS must be the same as the manufacturer or brand name displayed on the detail page
Includes all 16 standard SDS sections
The role of SDS
SDS enables Amazon to determine if your product is listed as dangerous
Correctly classify your product as hazardous or non-hazardous (classification determines how the product is stored and shipped)
Identify proper handling and disposal if product spills or leaks at the fulfillment center
Confirm that your product is a non-regulated product
What are the most common reasons for SDS rejection?
The product name or brand on the SDS does not exactly match the product name or brand on the detail page. If you edit the detail page to match your SDS, you will need to submit the SDS again after editing the detail page. There are conflicting information in the Hazard Identification and Shipping sections. For example, the Hazard Identification section states that the product is flammable, but the Shipping section is not. The SDS does not contain all 16 mandatory sections. This product has a flash point below 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius), but the product is declared unregulated in the shipping section, not flammable. The SDS is either undated or more than 5 years old. Uploaded documents are not SDS (for example, test reports or certification forms) and therefore cannot be used for classification.
When are product ingredient lists accepted?
Exemption form only applies to:
Products free of harmful chemicals
Batteries and Battery-Powered Devices
How long does the review process take?
The Hazmat team typically reviews each ASIN within 2 business days.
Why did my ASIN suddenly become a hazmat?
Amazon continually reviews products in the catalog to identify products that are regulated as dangerous goods. The goal is to ensure security and compliance. During these reviews, classifications may change. If you do not agree with the classification of your product, you can upload a new SDS or product ingredient list via the file upload tool.
