Wuhan star set sail: Amazon, Walmart and other US companies promise to hire more than 20,000 refugees in the next three years
Wuhan Xingqihang E-Commerce Co., Ltd. learned online that, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal on September 19, a number of large companies in the United States, led by Amazon, have pledged to employ more than 20,000 refugees in the next three years.
The Tent Partnership for Refugees reportedly said the pledges reflected a growing awareness among U.S. companies that hiring refugees would benefit their businesses. The group also said research showed consumers valued ethical behavior, while refugees were more loyal employees.
Still, the 20,000 recruiting target represents only a fraction of the Afghan and Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in the U.S. over the past year. Nearly 80,000 Afghans have arrived in the United States since the fall of the previous Afghan government, according to the U.S. government. According to a report released last month by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), some 41,000 resettled Afghans are of working age, many of whom have joined the U.S. labor force.
In addition, the Refugee Tent Cooperation said about 150,000 Ukrainians arrived in the United States on various visas, including tourist visas. About 50,000 people have arrived in the United States through the U.S. government's "United For Ukraine" program, which aims to provide Ukrainians with a way to seek asylum in the United States.
Amazon pledged on Monday to hire 5,000 refugees over the next three years, while Hilton Worldwide and Marriott International also pledged to hire 1,500 refugees each. Pfizer said it would hire 500 refugees.
Xingqihang believes that with the continuous influx of refugees into the United States, major American companies led by Amazon have set an example to provide more refugees with jobs that can settle down. The survival of refugees and the local security environment in the United States are both important. play an important and positive role.
