Amazon Australia requires a compliance report for consumer products containing button batteries and button batteries

According to Amazon policy, products sold through Amazon.com that contain coin cells or coin cells must meet specified certification standards. To sell these items on Amazon, the store must apply and submit the following information to electronics-safety@.au:

• Company Name;

• Seller ID;

• Email address;

• phone number;

• A list of ASINs containing coin cells or coin cells for sale;

• Image of the product's label (see below for relevant standards to be followed);

• Documentation from an officially recognised testing laboratory or body certifying that the product has been tested to the applicable standards listed in the table below: This mandatory requirement by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) specifies that all items containing buttons or coins Safety requirements for consumer products including storage containers and storage supplies for batteries.

This also applies to consumer accessories (such as remote controls) that contain coin cells or coin cells.

Standard applies to:

This regulation applies to:

(1) Lithium coin cell batteries (any size and type);

(2) Button lithium batteries with a diameter of 16 mm or more;

(3) Coin cell battery supplied together (not pre-installed in the product).

However, this regulation does not apply to:

(1) Button batteries using a zinc-air chemical process, designed or intended for use in hearing aids or hearing aid devices, (i.e. devices that collect sound by air conduction and transmit the processed sound into the ear canal);

(2) Button batteries supplied in bulk:

(a) for commercial, industrial company or professional use;

(b) Not for sale to the public.

(1) The coin cell battery shall not be released under reasonably foreseeable conditions of use or misuse

(2) The battery compartment must be able to prevent children from opening (3) The battery cover must be fixed

Button Battery:

Ø Structural design requirements:

Button/coin cells must be packaged in child-resistant packaging that meets specified compliance tests, i.e. packaging needs to limit the potential for infants and children to come into contact with the battery.

Label requirements:

1. The following warning signs shall be clearly visible, conspicuous and clearly marked on the package:

A warning word in capital letters (such as DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION); a safety alert symbol (internationally recognized); a "keep out of reach of children" marking symbol (internationally recognized); a statement to keep batteries away Children, declare as follows:

1) For button lithium battery: (Button battery is swallowed or enters any part of the body, it may cause serious or fatal injury in 2 hours or less)

2) For button batteries other than button lithium batteries: If the button battery is swallowed or enters any part of the body, serious injury may result;

One word of advice: If a coin cell battery is suspected to have been swallowed or entered any part of the body, seek immediate medical attention.

2. The following are examples of safety warnings and "keepout of reach of children" symbols specified in ISO 7010W001 and ISO 7010-M055 :

Also included in the information standard are some recommended warnings that are not mandatory but considered best practice:

1. Products with button battery

• Consumer products offered online should include a warning in the product description to remind consumers that the product they are buying contains button/coin cells, which are dangerous.

• Add contact information for the Australian Poisons Information Centre to warnings that should accompany consumer products containing button/coin cells.

• Advice on how to safely dispose of batteries should be provided to consumer products containing coin/coin cells. While the ACCC strongly recommends that manufacturers and suppliers adopt these special warnings, they are not mandatory.

2. Button battery

• Button/coin cells available online should include a warning in the product description to alert consumers to the dangers of button/coin cells.

• Button/coin cell battery packs should include contact information for the Australian Poisons Information Centre.

• Button/coin cell battery packaging should include advice on how to safely dispose of the battery.

• Where size permits, all button/coin cells, including lithium cells smaller than 20mm and all non-lithium button/coin cells, shall be marked with the internationally recognized "Keep Out of Children" symbol.

What are the penalties for non-compliance?

Supplying non-compliant consumer products may breach the ACL and expose a party to potential enforcement action by the ACCC. For the company, the maximum financial penalty for ACL violation will be the greater of : 3 times the value of the benefit earned on $10,000,000 10% of the first 12 months of annual turnover for which the benefit cannot be calculated. For individuals, the maximum fine for ACL violations is $500,000.
